Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Flooring

With the increasing concern of eco-sustainability, we are making sure that we carry more and more lines of flooring that take care of the environment, and in turn care for you family.  We offer products in all of our flooring categories – carpet, vinyl, area rugs, tile – that are committed to meeting the ethical standards and moral obligation of the environment, while also ensuring that your home looks beautiful. Just because something is eco-friendly, does not mean the product is not up to the standards that you expect & need from your flooring.

Hardwood

We all know that hardwood adds value to your home. Gorgeous hardwood floors are still possible while protecting the environment. Did you know that hardwood floors are listed as a great flooring type by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) due to the improvement of overall air quality in the home? Hardwood floors are hypoallergenic which is a win for those that do suffer from multiple types of allergies.

Wood is a reusable flooring type. Wood floors can be sanded down and re stained to suit newer or changed stain color taste. If you find that your home’s wood flooring is too damaged to stain again, there are many projects that you can do with the flooring instead of just throwing it away. Some even prefer the look of aged wood! If DIY projects aren’t for you, you can also donate the wood to be burned and used as fuel.

When looking for new hardwood flooring, it is important to look into the practices used by companies and manufacturers. You can significantly enhance your environmental responsibility by shopping with a company that is committed to sustainable practices and materials. Look for organizations that domestically source, and use materials from renewed forests. Another way to assess the eco-friendliness of a brand is to see if it has received any third-party certifications from environmental groups, such as the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and Forest Stewardship Council, or meets criteria set forth by the Cradle to Cradle Certified Products Program and the GREENGUARD Certification Program.

Some of the hardwood brands that we carry that have sustainable practices are Shaw Floors, Cali Bamboo, Bruce, Mannington, Hampstead Home USFloors.

Vinyl aka Linoleum

Forbo Flooring Systems offers an amazing flooring product made out of – plants. Marmoleum is made from natural raw materials, most of which are harvested as annual crops. Flax plants, which provide the vegetable linseed oil, jute, used for the mesh carrier on which linoleum is calendered and wood flour obtained from the waste material of production forestry, all during their lifetime capture CO2 which is absorbed in the plants and trees that are used to manufacture linoleum. Forbo Marmoleum is the only CO2 neutral resilient flooring and the best choice for every sustainable interior.

Tile Floor & Wall Covering

Tile has the smallest carbon footprint of any floor surface. It’s green certified and completely free of VOCs, plastics, and dangerous chemicals present in other flooring types. Tile is easy to clean and, if glazed, won’t absorb liquids or release unpleasant odors. Tile resists scratching and is fire-resistant. Tile doesn’t harbor potentially harmful mold spores, pollen, dust, or dust mites. It also doesn’t contain toxic chemicals and won’t give off fumes.

One well know tile company that does quite a bit to be earth conscious is daltile. More than 98% of Daltile’s manufactured products contain pre-consumer (post-industrial) recycled materials. Daltile has helped prevent an average of over 175 million pounds per year from ending up in our nation’s landfills.

Cork Flooring

Cork’s environmentally friendly nature starts with the actual product and production process that are used to create cork flooring. Only the bark of the cork oak tree is harvested and the tree continues to flourish after the cork is removed. The bark is replenished every nine years, which makes cork a renewable resource. There are many benefits to cork flooring – fire resistant, anti-allergen, no VOCs, it also condenses under pressure and then bounces back. What an amazing flooring material!
